Tommie Richard Lucas Jr. believed deeply in the power of

Tommie joined Kai USA in 2005 as an industrial designer working

across the company’s Sport and Housewares divisions. Among his

early designs were the first Shun countertop mandoline and the

Kershaw 1760 Skyline, which became a favorite among everyday-carry

knife enthusiasts.

Over time, Tommie developed expertise across every stage of the

product-development process, from the earliest design brief and

initial sketch through prototyping, refinement, manufacturing,

and production.

In 2014, he was promoted to Vice President of Design and

Development for Kai’s Housewares division, where he continued

to help shape some of the company’s most recognized kitchen

knife collections.

Unlike conventional clad construction, its blade is

coreless: alternating layers of VG10 and VG2

The alternating steels at the edge, together with

shaped by simplicity, toughness, and what Tommie

described as an “honesty of materials.”

were overly delicate or expensive without purpose.

Instead of relying on embellishment, the design

focused on durability and materials that could age

Solid AUS10A steel increased toughness, while the

throughout his career: using material strategically

and allowing construction itself to become part of

the visual design.

portion, where its performance matters most.

Polished stainless steel forms the upper blade, with

Tomi holds a special place in Tommie Lucas’ work as the final Shun series he designed. When Tommie passed unexpectedly, the design of the collection was complete, but the series had not yet been named.

The Japanese word tomi means wealth and abundance. In the midst of an immense loss, naming the series Tomi became a way to honor Tommie and the abundance he brought into the lives of those who knew him—through his creativity, generosity, humor, mentorship, and friendship.

The collection reflects the same attention to detail that defined his approach to design: a thoughtful balance of visual refinement, comfort, and everyday performance. Its deeply textured blade, softened touchpoints, ridged onyx pakkawood handle, and carefully considered materials create an experience that is distinctive without being ornamental for ornament’s sake.

In that sense, Tomi is more than the final series Tommie designed. Its name carries forward the richness of what he gave to the people around him and to the work he leaves behind.
